Learning in Action, May 2025: Curious Learners, Creative Showcase

🎨 Inspiration All Around Us: A Kindergarten Art Showcase

Our Kindergarten group, the Foxes, explored the idea that artists find inspiration in daily life to create art for different purposes. Their journey began with a lively brainstorming session, where ideas flowed from trees, flowers, and seasons to animals, pets, and people.

Fuelled by creativity, the Foxes experimented with a wide range of materials: watercolours, pastels, clay, wood, glass, and more. Each medium gave them new ways to express their ideas and explore artistic techniques.

An art walk through Schaffhausen’s city centre further developed their inquiry; it helped them to see how art is all around us on buildings, murals, clothing, and everyday objects. They discovered that art can decorate, tell stories, celebrate, and preserve memories.

Back in the classroom, students created original artworks and collaborated on two group projects: a woven wall hanging and a magical storybook filled with dragons and unicorns.

Throughout the school year, the Foxes carefully collected and curated their artistic creations. This journey culminated in an Art Exhibition, a joyful celebration of their work and creativity. Parents were invited for a special first look, where they had the chance to explore the full collection of their children’s art and hear about the inspirations behind each piece. The exhibition also drew interest from across the ISSH community, with students and staff from all sections visiting to admire the vibrant display.

We’re incredibly proud of our young artists and the thoughtful, imaginative work they shared. Bravo, Foxes! A heartfelt thank-you also goes to their dedicated teachers, whose guidance, encouragement, and creativity made this artistic journey, and the beautiful exhibition, possible.

🌟 Celebrating Creativity, Inquiry, and Action: The Grade 5 PYP Exhibition

Each year, the Grade 5 Exhibition marks a major milestone in the journey of our Primary Years Programme (PYP) students. As the culminating experience of the PYP, the Exhibition is more than a final project, it is a celebration of student agency, deep inquiry, and meaningful action.

Over the past weeks, our Grade 5 students embarked on an exciting learning journey, exploring topics they felt passionate about. Guided by the IB philosophy and supported by teachers and mentors, they engaged in independent and collaborative research, conducted interviews, reflected on their findings, and worked to communicate their learning in creative and impactful ways.

The range of topics they chose was as impressive as their dedication an each project reflected not only the students’ curiosity but also their growing sense of global citizenship and responsibility.

One of the most powerful elements of the Exhibition is the development of key IB Learner Profile attributes and Approaches to Learning: students demonstrated being inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers, embracing challenges and stepping confidently into the role of presenters and advocates.

During the final presentation days, families, peers, and staff were invited to engage with the students’ displays and presentations. It was a joy to see our young learners speak with confidence and pride, explain their thinking, answer questions thoughtfully, and reflect on what this process taught them, not just about their topic, but about themselves as learners.

The Grade 5 Exhibition is not only a celebration of academic growth but also a meaningful transition. It marks the end of the PYP and as they move forward, these students carry with them skills that will serve them well, critical thinking, collaboration, empathy, and a passion for lifelong learning.

A big thank-you goes to the Grade 5 teaching team, mentors, and families for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout the process. And to our students: your creativity, courage, and commitment truly inspired us all. Well done, Grade 5, we are proud of you!
