From Zurich to Texas: Jan’s Hackathon Adventure
At ISSH, we believe that learning thrives when curiosity meets opportunity and that’s exactly what happened when Jan, a Grade 8 student, turned his passion for coding into a real-world experience on the global stage. In February, Jan traveled all the way to Austin, Texas to participate in a student-led hackathon. His story is a fantastic example of how STEAM learning empowers students to think creatively, collaborate with others, and solve problems in innovative ways.
Here’s Jan’s story, in his own words:
This February, I joined a global hackathon in Austin, TX, hosted by HackClub, a nonprofit that unites young coders worldwide. The theme? “Scrappy Ideas That No One Needs but Impresses the People Around You.” It was all about creativity and fun, not just solving problems.
Before the trip, I prepped by finishing schoolwork, renewing my ESTA, and packing with excitement. Flying from Zurich to Texas was a whirlwind of nerves and thrill. A hotel mix-up turned into a win when I got upgraded to a quiet room, perfect for focus.
At the event, I teamed up with Alice and Isaac to create “Resource Maxxing,” a project to put idle computer power to good use. Coding wasn’t easy: there were late-night naps, but also surprise ice cream and a quick karaoke break that kept our energy up.
By the end, we nailed our project and had a blast doing it. I learned tons about coding, teamwork, and why having fun is just as important as the code. This hackathon was unforgettable!

We’re proud to see students like Jan taking initiative, exploring their passions, and making global connections through STEAM. Experiences like these show that learning can be hands-on, heartfelt, and full of impact, both inside and far beyond the classroom.
Elemental Pursuits: Stanislaw’s journey to the Swiss Chemistry Olympiad
At ISSH, we celebrate students who turn their passions into extraordinary achievements. Stanisław, one of our Grade 12 graduates, has done exactly that; twice reaching the finals of the Swiss Chemistry Olympiad, one of the country’s most rigorous academic competitions. His dedication exemplifies how curiosity, resilience, and support can take learning far beyond the classroom.
“It all begins with an online test taken by hundreds of students. Only the top 80 advance,” Stanisław explains. From there, he delved into bachelor-level theory, hands-on lab work at EPFL and ETH Zurich, and exams that challenge even the most seasoned learners. “The Olympiad is intense, but it’s incredibly rewarding. I’ve grown so much, especially in the lab, and I feel ready for university now.”
But the Olympiad offered more than just academic growth. Stanisław learned to stay calm under pressure. “Six hours of written and practical exams really test your focus,” he says. He also discovered the value of community. “I built friendships, connected with university professors, and learned from past winners,” he shares. His hard work paid off; a top-18 finish earned him the opportunity to compete for a spot at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Dubai.
We could not be prouder of Stanisław’s achievements and the way he embodies the IB learner profile: inquirer, thinker, communicator, and risk-taker. Congratulations, Stanisław, and best of luck as you take on the next challenge!
