Learning in Action, April 2025: find out how business and biodiversity go hand in hand

From Classroom to Countryside: Exploring Ethical Entrepreneurship

As part of their current IB PYP unit, How We Organise Ourselves, our students have been exploring the systems that underpin the world of business, with a special focus on business ethics. In true PYP spirit, this inquiry extends beyond understanding how businesses operate; it encourages students to consider the broader responsibilities that come with entrepreneurship, including environmental stewardship and ethical decision-making.

To bring this inquiry to life, students embarked on an enriching excursion to the Klettgau region, where they experienced firsthand the value and fragility of our natural environment. Guided by an expert from the Swiss Ornithological Institute, students observed birdlife in the surroundings of a local school and the nearby vineyards.

A highlight of the visit was discovering how local winemakers take active steps to protect biodiversity by supporting native bird species. From planting wildflowers to attract insects, to providing nesting aids and leaving parts of the land undisturbed, these vineyard owners exemplify how businesses can thrive while caring for the planet.

This real-world connection reinforced key PYP concepts such as responsibility, connection, and sustainability. By linking classroom learning with authentic experiences, the unit empowers students to think critically and act thoughtfully, recognising that successful businesses can, and should, contribute positively to the world around them.
