Embracing Local Sports: Balancing Athletics and Academics
At ISSH, we recognise the important role that sports play in supporting academic growth. Physical activity not only promotes well-being and resilience but also enhances focus, discipline, and time management, which are essential skills for success in the classroom and beyond. With Schaffhausen offering a diverse range of sporting opportunities, many in our school community actively embrace and benefit from them.
As March is the month of International Women’s Day, we celebrate two inspiring young athletes from our school community who successfully balance their academic journey with their sporting passions.
Catherine, a dedicated long-distance runner, has been a member of the Schaffhausen Leichtathletik Club since 2022. “Since joining, my journey as a runner has been both challenging and rewarding. The structured training and supportive team constantly push me to improve. Over the past two years, I’ve competed in various races, including the SRS Waldlauf (8km) and the Schaffhausen Stadtlauf. I started with shorter races, like the 1km event in Uster, but as my endurance grew, I transitioned to longer distances. Running has become a fundamental part of my life, shaping me both physically and mentally. It has taught me discipline, perseverance, and goal setting, and I look forward to embracing new challenges ahead.”
Sarah, a passionate sprint kayaker, has been training at Kanu Club Schaffhausen since 2021. “Since joining, I have worked my way towards the competitive race groups, pushing myself physically and mentally. While I race in single boats, there’s a strong sense of teamwork within the club, and I’ve built lifelong friendships. This past season, I competed in the Internationale Regatta Rapperswil – Kurzstrecken Schweizermeisterschaft, winning the 500m and 200m races in my age category and earning my first Swiss Champion title. Sprint kayaking has become more than just a sport; it’s a passion and a commitment I look forward to every day.”
Through their dedication, Catherine and Sarah embody the positive impact of sport on personal and academic growth, demonstrating how athletics and education go hand in hand in building confidence, resilience, and success.
