Some tips to survive the first few weeks of boarding school

If you are starting boarding school next August, you have probably already started to think about what to pack.
Schools typically send out a list of things that you need to bring along for safety, comfort and the ability to function within the boarding house.
They will try to make the boarding house as comfortable and welcoming as possible.
However, it is often the items that are NOT on these lists which are the most valuable to have.
Little bits of “home” that will make it just that little bit easier for you to adjust to a life away from your familiar surroundings. Wall decorations, fairy lights, a few pictures of family, friends and pets, a personal mug, a cozy cushion or fleece blanket, headphones to listen to your favourite songs or a book that you love are just some of the items to add to your packing list.
A lock up tool box for personal treasures and a diary to share your secret thoughts with might also come in handy, as well as some ear plugs, in case you end up with a snoring roommate.
Some board games and playing cards might help to break the ice and get to know your fellow boarders.
In case all of these items will not be enough to eliminate a little bit of homesickness, ask your friends and family to send you “care packages” for some extra excitement in the mail including special foods from home or little notes and photos from loved ones.

Should you still have forgotten “the one important thing” that should have been on your packing list, our staff will always have an open ear for you and we are all looking forward to welcoming you at the International School of Schaffhausen after summer!
