Student safety at Swiss boarding school
Wellbeing support & supervision

We believe that when physical health and mental wellbeing are prioritised, we create an environment where all students can thrive and achieve their full potential.

Student wellbeing is seamlessly integrated into every aspect of our boarding programme. We provide guidance and structure as students develop independence and responsibility, whilst our boarding team helps them learn to support their own physical and mental health through balanced nutrition, healthy sleep habits, regular physical activity and effective stress-management techniques.

Professional care framework
Trained staff & student support systems

The safety and welfare of each student is our highest priority, with all ISSH faculty and staff sharing this fundamental commitment. We recognise that children have the right to be protected from harm and that young people cannot learn effectively without feeling physically and emotionally secure.

The ISSH Safeguarding Committee regularly reviews our programmes, policies and procedures to ensure our students' wellbeing is protected at all times, fostering an environment in which they can flourish.

Care that feels like home

Our team of qualified care professionals brings diverse skills and experience from fields such as healthcare, nutrition and pedagogy, equipping them to provide exceptional support to students in our boarding programme. Our boarding houses are continuously supervised by our dedicated team after school hours, overnight and during mornings. Caregivers stay overnight in our boarding houses, ensuring students receive consistent supervision and care. Our small boarding groups enable carers to provide attentive, individualised attention to each student, whether through informal check-ins over meals or structured meetings with our Head of Boarding.

Student wellbeing support
Balanced living for international boarders

Wellbeing extends far beyond physical safety. Our aim is to cultivate an environment where boarding students can truly flourish. A balanced lifestyle is essential to this vision, and our boarding team encourages students to find harmony in their daily routines. Whilst our rigorous academic programme is appropriately challenging, we ensure students have restorative time for relaxation, socialising and pursuing personal interests, helping them bring their best selves to the classroom.

We regularly discuss important wellbeing topics with our boarding students, including healthy sleep patterns, building meaningful social connections, maintaining physical activity, digital safety and developing a positive relationship with technology.

In the academic setting, we provide education in stress-reduction techniques, with particular emphasis during examination periods to help students manage pressure effectively.

Medical care & health insurance
Healthcare for international boarding students

We understand that students occasionally fall ill. When a student experiences a minor ailment, they speak with the staff member on duty, who carefully evaluates their symptoms. We provide compassionate care, perhaps a comforting cup of tea or a nourishing meal, along with extra attention and support. Staff closely monitor symptoms and keep parents informed about their child's condition. If a doctor's visit becomes necessary, our staff promptly arrange appointments and ensure any follow-up treatment is properly implemented.

For more serious health concerns, we act swiftly to secure appropriate medical care while maintaining clear communication with parents.

Switzerland offers excellent medical care, and all international students at ISSH are enrolled in our comprehensive health insurance policy, providing extensive coverage for their healthcare needs.

Security and safety

Switzerland consistently ranks among the world's top ten countries for societal safety and security, distinguished by exceptionally low crime rates, enduring political stability, and strong community cohesion. This reputation for safety extends throughout the nation, creating an ideal environment for international boarding students.

Schaffhausen exemplifies these national characteristics on a local scale. With a population of approximately 40,000 residents, our host city maintains the close-knit atmosphere of a village community where neighbours genuinely look out for one another. This creates an additional layer of natural security that complements our formal safety protocols.
